Mongol, in theaters June 6th
"Greatness comes to those who take it."
If you're a fan of the medieval-style massive axe-and-sword-battle on horseback type of thing, the upcoming Mongol just might be up your alley. Looks like it may be a love story (sigh) wrapped up in a sort-of biographical war movie, so keep that in mind. Could be interesting as the history of one of the most infamous warlords of all time.... and a possible trilogy could be in the works....
Here's a trailer:
Mongol makes its US debut June 6th, I couldn't find any info on distribution. It's won several film awards in Russia and Asia (I don't believe its in English, so again...) And is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Rules of Engagement (2000)
In the vein of such military courtroom dramas as A Few Good Men and The Caine Mutiny, comes Rules of Engagement. The short version: One Marine Corps. Col. Terry Childers (Samuel L. Jackson) must defend his decision to fire on a crowd of protestors at the US Embassy in Yemen. Defending him is his buddy since Vietnam, who was saved by Childers in a nasty battle there, Col. Hayes Hodges (Tommy Lee Jones.)At the core of Rules of Engagement is the entire principle of the boundaries of war. In fact one of the characters spells it out quite clearly, "There's a thin line between a war hero and a murderer." Or something to that effect. Childers has to make the best decision he can, knowing full well the consequences. Which are plentiful.

Military Intelligence and You (2007)
Military Intelligence and You is one of the funniest pictures I've seen in a while. It's a creative spoof on "old style" World War II films, with enough jabs and pokes at the current administration and war effort to fill a "B-99" bomber.A brilliant blending of WWII-era training films and new footage, it pits intel officer Major Nick Reed (Patrick Muldoon) against the task of obtaining valid intelligence in order to attack the base of the German's "Ghost Squadron." The "Ghosts" have been using their 109's to repeatedly obliterate the 950th bomber squadron on their runs.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
You know anytime you put Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts together, you're going to get something which is at least a fun, well-acted ride. Charlie Wilson's War is no exception. It's the "true" story of one Texas Congressman, Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), who throughout the 1980's managed to get oodles of money to fund weapons for the Afghan Mujahadeen to fight the invading Red Menace(tm). While there may not really be that many typical "war movie" elements to speak of here, the premise is just as relevant.

Son of Rambow
This curious little picture opens this weekend. I only mention it because it involves a young English boy whose mind is 'blown open' by watching Rambo: First Blood, the first movie he's allowed to see.
Unsure why they'd pick something like that, or how this will turn out. But it will likely be an interesting look at the effect war movies have on people....

Pinkville Update
Been a little while since I've heard any news on Oliver Stone's upcoming 'Pinkville' film on the '68 My Lai Massacre...
Technorati Tags: pinkville, michael pitt, oliver stone, my lai, vietnam
He still has a chance, especially if he takes the part of Lt. William Calley in Oliver Stone's Pinkville. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he's currently in talks for the role, and if he's smart he'll just go ahead and grab it. Calley is the central figure in the Vietnam war film, which deals with the investigation into the 1968 Mai Lai Massacre; the Army officer was the one found guilty of giving the orders that sparked the incident. Pitt would join an ensemble cast that already includes Bruce Willis (or as I like to call him, Bruce Billis), Channing Tatum (another young actor continually teetering on the verge of stardom), Michael Peña (previously seen in Stone's World Trade Center), Woody Harrelson and Xzibit, who just joined on this week. Also joining the film is Toby Jones (Infamous), who will portray Lt. Andre Feher, the chief warrant officer who tries to convince Willis' character, Gen. William Peers, that the U.S. Army is responsible for the massacre.Link: Michael Pitt in Talks for 'Pinkville' - Cinematical
