This is a pretty undefinable little film. It departs significantly at times from the usual documentary format. In fact, at times you will (at least I did) wonder if some of the shots aren't staged. There are a lot of these moments. So many in fact that it somewhat takes away from the entire experience.

Fortunately, though, none of these moments occur when the camera is out in the field with these guys. Which is where the shit really hits the fan. The final scene where the platoon gets split with a squad of Taliban stuck in a ditch between them.... It doesn't get much more harrowing than that. And brutal. Scenes like this show just what its like. Without any sugar coating. Apart from that it reminded me more of a TV reality show. Mainly because of the camera/production work that they dressed it up in during the soldiers' down time. Then the almost "fabricated" soap opera surrounding that ambush which never goes anywhere....

This review is pretty short, I will admit. It's basically because there isn't a lot to say. The basic premise is this: 1) Film a bit of the guys before they leave, 2) film them "over there" as various things happen to them, 3) film a bit as they return home.

All that said, I'm going to give this a solid 7/10. I would have gone less, but the actual "in the field" stuff really does make the "other stuff" not quite so important or distracting overall. I know this was a pretty acclaimed movie, but I couldn't bring myself to get all excited about it.

One thing I did notice, and I wondered why it wasn't included, because you know at one point one of them said it. None of them really wondered out loud on camera, "just WTF are we Danes doing here, anyway?" Especially as their guys get killed and wounded. I know I'd be thinking it. Don't get me wrong, the contribution they make to the overall effort over there is invaluable, and greatly appreciated. I'm speaking on a personal level, from their point of view....

Obviously, all of the dialog is in Danish and subtitled. Not a problem for me, just need to point this out.

Description

Armadillo is a raw and unforgettable journey into the war in Afghanistan. Mads and Daniel are Danish troops joining the NATO mission in Helmand Province. Their platoon is stationed in Camp Armadillo, with Taliban fighters a stone's throw away. Filmmaker Janus Metz is deeply embedded with the platoon, documenting first-hand the daily grind of modern warfare, tense waiting followed by intense flurries of bloodshed. During gunfights his camera is right at the front line, recording the mortal dangers the troops face daily. Unable to tell Afghan civilians apart from combatants, the platoon's skepticism of the humanitarian effort grows, as well as their yearning for the black and white morality of battle. Ethical lines are blurred, and a sense of besieged paranoia sets in to their warrior mentality. Armadillo is a harrowing journey into the minds of soldiers during a war without end.

Ah, medieval England. King John has declared the Magna Carta invalid and has gone on a mission of conquest across the land to reclaim his keeps from the peoples. Or at least that's the version portrayed here. Just to get this out in the open, this movie is (very) loosely based on the Siege of Rochester Castle. Let's just say reality is quite, quite different than the events portrayed here, so don't go writing any history reports based on this movie.

In this version, Marshal (James Purefoy) is one of the famed Knights Templar, and becomes involved with the Barons whom King John has now effectively declared war on. They make their stand at Rochester Castle, where he (inevitably) is conflicted by his vows to the church and his order, and his feelings for Rochester's daughter, Isabel (Kate Mara.) Here, they manage to stave off the English army, almost literally to the last man (and woman) until the French arrive and save the day. Again, not what happened.

As an action movie, though, it pretty much fits the bill. Although it is an extremely graphic one. Extremely. There is enough blood visibly spilled, along with severed limbs and heads to fill more than a few buckets. As an accurate depiction of medieval combat, I'm pretty sure they got pretty close to the mark. But after a while you just start to go, "oh, man, that was unnecessary!" Especially when Albany (Brian Cox) is, um, dispatched.

Purefoy is suitably stoic as Marshal, maybe too much so. Kate Mara won't be winning any Oscars here, and the casting of Paul Giamatti as King John is either pure genius or a royal (ha) screwup. He's just crazy enough to pull it off, which he does, but you've seen him enough in other movies as "that crazy guy" that it doesn't quite seem right.

So, put away the textbooks, and prepare your stomach. Ironclad is a pretty decent medieval action/combat picture based in a compressed, altered version of English history. I still have to give it a mere 6/10, though. It's fair, but its not all that great.

Description

In the 13th century a determined group of Knights Templar defends Rochester Castle against the tyrannical King John. It is the year 1215 and the rebel barons of England have forced their despised King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta, a noble, seminal document that upheld the rights of free-men. Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule. Barring his way stood the mighty Rochester castle, a place that would become the symbol of the rebel's momentous struggle for justice and freedom.

Aw, yeah. So what if its "yet another comic book movie?" Captain America is just a whole lot of old fashioned fantasy fun. Of course setting it against the backdrop of WWII doesn't hurt things either, and gets it a spot on the old WMB, too!

The backstory: 98-pound weakling Steve Rogers gets tapped for a government experiment to create a new breed of "super soldiers" to fight the Nazis in Europe. Only it turns out there is a more sinister menace to deal with. That of course is the still more ambitious world-domination-bent group HYDRA, helmed by the more-evil-than-Hitler "Red Skull" aka Johann Schmit. After his initial transformation, he's sent out to be a spokesperson in a "Captain America" themed war bond tour, finally ending up in Europe and having to rescue his best friend, Bucky Barnes. He's re-re-purposed (back to his original, uh, purpose) and he and his team hunt down Hydra's bases and ultimately (as always, without spoiling the fun) the good guys win.

I'm not about to debate the merits of this movie from a realistic or historic point of view. Because it really hasn't any. But that's not the point. Actually, I fear a lot of the subtler points of the movie will be lost on today's generation, who a) don't understand a lot of WWII history, and b) don't get things like war bond drives and 4F jokes.

Of course, the real purpose of this film is to set up an "Avengers" movie somewhere down the road, along with the other recent Marvel onscreen characters Thor, Iron Man, and probably another Hulk movie. (I can't remember if the last one was part of this effort or not!) So yeah, SHIELD will make an obvious appearance here. There's also a subtle tie-in to the Thor movie at the beginning, but its done in a way that if you didn't see Thor, you're not left scratching your head.

All-in all, there's lots of war-movie-like action to be had. Even if it does involve human-vaporizing laser weapons, various Nazi-might-have-beens and other obvious anachronisms. Actually I felt in a lot of places certain elements may have been "borrowed" from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Such as the giant and imagined flying wing aircraft, and Schmit's scientist sidekick looking suspiciously like Major Toht at times. Don't miss the visit by Himmler and Goebbels to Hydra's compound either, another moment probably lost on a lot of people as I don't think it was explained who they were. At least it looked like it was supposed to be them. *shrug*

But what I thought really made this movie was its "respect" if you will for the entire character and mythos of Captain America, and the time he was conceived in. Just another kid from Brooklyn turned super hero during the war. The whole war bond tour and 4F routine, while probably foreign to a lot of viewers, are a big tip-of-the-hat to past war movies. And, I've heard a lot of complaining about the in-your-face patriotism and "propaganda" present in this film, BUT THAT'S KIND OF THE POINT, isn't it?! If anything it only makes everything better.

Chris Evans has the looks and chemistry to pull off this character big time, I can't say anything bad there. They definitely found their "All American Boy." Of course you've got to have a female character/love interest, and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter manages to be a strong, yet somehow stereotypical 40's female character at the same time. Hugo Weaving is (as always) menacing as the evil Red Skull, even if the character's makeup kept reminding me of British heavy metal band Iron Maiden's mascot, Eddie. And Tommy Lee Jones steals the show all around as Col. Philips, managing to be both the archetypal hard-ass superior and the source of a lot of straight-man comic relief. Then there's the Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) character. I've heard a lot of griping from the comic-purist community about how this was handled, and not knowing anything about the character's previous incarnations, I still thought it sucked.

The rest of the good Captain's team just seems to be along for the ride, though, which is understandable, not everyone can be front and center. And (as I said) there is a cameo near the end by Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role from Iron Man 2 as part of the SHIELD organization.

What can go wrong? Turns out, that much like Thor, there is a great deal of time spent on explaining the "origin" bit, which leaves precious little time for action. From Roger's initial transformation and "discovery" we're left with quite a lull in the action. Get past it, though, and it doesn't stop.

So, if you're willing to shut off your brain for a couple of hours, sit back and enjoy the ride, Captain America: The First Avenger just might take you back to the glory days of superheroes and war movies at the same time. Maybe. It did me, anyway.

Renny Harlin was interviewed by "Den of Geek" regarding his movie "5 Days of War" (or 5 Days of August) which is supposedly out on DVD and Blu Ray. I don't see this on Netflix at all, or Amazon, and this is (not surprisingly) the first I've heard of it being out there. Must not be out in the states yet.... (Edit: Yup, "Den of Geek" is a UK site.)

IMDB lists it as "A drama set centered around the war between Russia and Georgia, and focused on an American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native who become caught in the crossfire."... Starring Rupert Friend, Andy Garcia, and Val Kilmer.

A quip from the article:

You know, with Mannerheim, I wanted to make something that was reality-based and really touched upon a lot of serious and real issues and history. And this is very recent history, but in the same way, I felt that I could really sink my teeth into something that wasn't just popcorn entertainment, like 12 Rounds was.

I could give these people a voice. Now, in Libya or Afghanistan, or wherever, these wars just keep on going everywhere, and a lot of times we don't really get a real sense of what normal people go through, and what kind of sacrifices they make, and what kind of incredible suffering they go through.

And then I felt that the point of view of the journalists was also interesting, because they are sort of the unsung heroes. People don't realise that they are in the front lines there and without weapons, and at the mercy of events.

So keep an eye out for this one. I'll try and find a way to watch this one, hopefully.

The phrase "Gray Lady Down", at least according to the movie of the same name, refers to the situation where a nuclear submarine has sank. (sunk? sunken? sinked? ah, heck.)

Here, the Neptune, helmed by Captain Blanchard (Charlton Heston) collides with another ship in an unfortunate accident, and finds herself at the bottom of the ocean, where they await rescue. I don't know what class of submarine they're supposed to be in, either, but you could almost play tennis in that thing.... (nitpick, I know.)

And that's pretty much the long and short of the movie. Actually, it reminded me a lot of stock 1970's disaster movies, with a healthy dose of 70's TV-ish moments, and some downright awful straight-from-TV soundtrack sequences (but others that were actually quite good! go figure.) I'm not even sure you could technically classify it as a "war movie," other than that A) it involves the military and B) it's a movie. Take that for what you will.

The predictable plot unfolds, rescue team comes, problems and conflicts arise both on the surface and below, eventually most everyone is rescued and they all live happily ever after. Predictable being the key word here. Just about every move you could see the end result a mile away. From the untimely and heroic demise of Capt. Gates (David Carradine) to the sacrifice of Cmdr. Samuelson (Ronny Cox)....

Not to say at all that this is a bad movie. Actually it isn't that bad at all, its just not quite what I was expecting.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a veritable whos-who of 1970's and 1980's film and television, including a young Christopher Reeves, and a young Stacey Keach (younger than I remember him in anything anyway!)

All in all I'm throwing this a 6/10. Just because even though its not all *that* bad, its pretty formulaic, and not really a war movie at all. Just saying.

Take some lesser-known actors, add a dash of Rambo, the A-Team, WWE wrestler "Mr. Kennedy," plenty of action scenes and tons of corny (and badly delivered) one-liners, and what do you get? This.

They get stranded in Colombia after being framed for an attack on the compound they were about to bail out of, and of course have to prove their innocence. All this while the CIA (or is it NSA, get your bureaus straight lol!) takes over the operation to try and preserve some diplomatic face....

And actually, somwhat ashamedly, I kind of enjoyed it. Yeah it has its flaws. Plenty of them. But this is a fun little action movie at its core. Not to bloody, not too far over the top, not a lot of profanity (but just enough,) no big message, and no pretentiousness to speak of. If I had to put a label on it, I'd say this is definitely one of those "guy" movies.

The ending though, was a bit too abrupt for me, and there were a couple of continuity faults that I noticed, and the premise isn't explained well enough. Like I said, the acting isn't top-notch, but it's not half bad either.

File this under "Weekend afternoon popcorn muncher" and you'd be spot on. It'd have been a lot better if those corny one-liners had been delivered with a little more setup and better timing!

Look, I actually liked this movie. Yeah, I did. It has its flaws, but overall its a fun ride, if you don't think too hard.

Our main character, Staff Sgt. Nance (Aaron Eckhart) is on the edge of finally getting out of the Marine Corps, when out of nowhere, Earth is invaded by an unknown alien military force. He's thrown back in the mix, helping newbie 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez) and the rest of his squad get some trapped civilians out of the soon-to-be-destroyed bombing area, while the rest of his platoon holds the line. They pick up some stragglers, including Air Force Tech Sgt. Santos (Michelle Rodriguez), who seems to be somewhat annoyed at being here.

Predictably (and yes, a lot of this film is completely predictable) its not quite so simple. They're pinned down and escape several times, several of his men bite the big one, but in the end the good guys prevail. I won't spoil the details, but suffice to say it reminded me of the end of The Phantom Menace just a tad.

I really have to give a nod to the creators for not going the obvious route and laying out the alien invasion force for all to see. Much like Cloverfield, the agressors remain in a mysterious state of unknown at first. All we get are little spastic glimpses here and there, revealing more as the movie progresses. A nice touch, as we sort of feel like the squad, not knowing what exactly we're dealing with. Unfortunately when we do get a complete look at them, they're not really all that creative in design. The look falls somewhere between District 9 and Transformers. Eh, I can let that go I suppose.

The combat scenes are pretty intense for a PG-13 effort. Obviously, due to the rating, you're not going to get any uber-realistic combat gore here, and that's OK, too. There are plenty of cliches and attempts at sentiment, but none of them really go too far over the top to be annoying.

But those flaws I spoke of, yeah there are a few. Notably the pacing drags out quite a bit towards the end, just before the big finale. The "calm before the storm" gets a little too calm for me. And what's with the big orange bus thing? I'm sorry, but if that's me, I'm not going to get on board a giant bright orange moving target. Sorry! I'm all for battlefield improv, but whoa!

And where's the armor and artillery? There's a brief scene with a mortar up front, and some arty thrown in at the end, but for the most part they'd have you believe that its just not there. Plenty of helicopters, though. The lack of air support is suitably (if predictably) explained away, but not the armor situation.

Also unfortunate is the falling into the "video game" mode of introducing bigger-and-badder alien "bosses" to conquer as the movie rolls on.... If there's not a B:LA themed FPS out there already, (I don't follow such things) there should be.

This could have easily been turned into a more Black Hawk Down-like effort by leaving out the civilians, turning up the intensity and really pouring it on. In a way I'm glad they didn't. It makes for a satisfying rainy Saturday-afternoon "root for the good guys" type of war movie, which we haven't seen in a while.

I'm handing out a very hesitant 7/10. Which seems both high and low to me, but as awesomely fun as this movie is, its not destined for any awards.

Description

Witness the end of civilization unfold as hostile alien invaders attack the planet. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. Now it's up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered in this epic sci-fi action film.

Battle: Los Angeles is a war movie first, science fiction second. It's got it all: a burned-out retiring sergeant who gets drawn back in because, dammit, the Marines need him; the guy who's about to get married; the guy who's still a virgin; the guy suffering from shell shock and who just might crack; the newbie officer with a lot of book learning who you just know is going to freeze under pressure and have to be shepherded by that burned-out sergeant, who learned his lessons on the battlefield… and so much more. There's not a moment in this movie you haven't seen before--the only twist is that the enemy is alien, so whatever shred of concern you might have for raining heavy artillery on a fellow human being can be cheerfully cast aside. But clichés are clichés because they are efficient and effective, and despite the profound familiarity of Battle: Los Angeles, there's no denying the movie rips along (though two-thirds of the way through you may have forgotten who was the virgin and who was the shell-shocked guy--but really, does it matter?). The look owes a debt to District 9, a hand-held, vérité grittiness, with most of the CGI carefully given a dingy, dirty look so that it meshes with the urban landscape. Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) does an impressive job of spitting out ham-fisted dialogue like he really, really means it, while the rest of the cast is suitably generic. This is an unrepentant love letter to the military; many viewers, faced with the unsettling chaos and moral ambiguities of real wars, will find this mythologizing not only soothing, but even moving. --Bret Fetzer

It takes place in British occupied India, more specifically the territory still squabbled over between India and Pakistan, just after the turn of the century when the British foothold in the region was sketchy at best.

Capt. Scott (Kenneth More) is tasked with transporting the local Indian royalty, a small child, to safety on board a dilapidated old train and one coach. And, as you can imagine, the fun only increases.

Actually this isn't a bad movie at all. On the contrary, from the beginning, I found myself drawing parallels in the direction and cinematography to the likes of Lucas and Spielberg. The pacing and action in the leading battle scene were quite familiar. (The opening "Rank Organization" gong bit in itself, which probably appeared in a lot of films, both of them paid homage to in "Temple of Doom..." But anyway.)

Along with the boy, his American governess Ms. Wyatt (Lauren Bacall), a couple of the British uppity-ups from the palace they just left, an arms dealer, and a turncoat newspaper reporter, they break thru the surrounding Muslim invaders and get into one spot of trouble after another.

Surprisingly it isn't as bad as it sounds. The episodes they get into are perfectly believable given their situation, and there really isn't any point where you throw your hands up and go, "Fffft! yeah, whatever!" which is always a breath of fresh air. One action-and-suspense filled moment follows the previous, with just enough "down time" in between to make the pacing really excellent.

More reminds me a lot of James Mason here. A lot. Probably due to their nearly indistinguishable accent and appearance. But he holds his own as the "stiff-upper-lip" British soldier. Bacall seems to be somewhere else throughout most of it however, in a strange 'spaced out' ness I can't really explain. A couple of gems here are Wilfrid Hyde-White as the tongue-in-cheek funny Bridie, and I.S. Johar as the faithful and funny Gupta, the driver of the immortal "Victoria."

One thing that struck me most interesting, was the subject matter. The whole Indian-vs-Muslim thing that is still going on today in the region. It almost lends the picture a certain relevance that you wouldn't otherwise have. Then there is the treachery of reporter Van Layden (Herbert Lom).... Which I won't spoil for you here.

Not sure what else to say. If you want a good, suspense and action-filled Saturday afternoon film for the whole family (although the massacre on the refugee train might be a bit much) then Flame Over India is a good bet.

Unfortunately, much like yesterday's Sabre Jet, I can't seem to find any clips or trailers.... drop me a line if you know of one.
