There are some movies that just surprise the heck out of you. You go in thinking, "Oooohhhh brother. This is going to suck!"

And then it doesn't! "Keep Your Powder Dry" surprised the dickens out of me. The story of three very different women who join up with the WACs in 1945, it turns out to be not half bad. Yeah, yeah, you have to live with the fact that its nearly 100% WAC recruiting material. And face it, in '45 they probably needed it.

You've got Rand (Laraine Day) the typical "Army Brat" who joins up because she figures she has to. Then there's Parks (Lana Turner) the spoiled rich kid who joins up with ulterior motives, but realizes the true meaning of it all. And Darrison (Susan Peters), your average girl-next-door.

It takes a bit to get into it, I'll admit. Once you get past the stereotypical "girl stuff", the pieces start to come together and you go right along with their journey towards being WAC officers.

I'm not going to spoil the ending, but as often happened, not everything turns out for the best.

And quite frankly, how can you not watch Lana Turner, Laraine Day, and Susan Peters for nearly ninety minutes straight! Come ON! Got to love the overabundance of soft-focus close ups!

A fun 6 out of 10. Eh, I'd go higher but it is pretty silly business after all. And it doesn't appear to be available on DVD yet, so a big thanks to TCM for making this part of their Memorial Day lineup!
