Monsters and Critics reviews the recent double feature DVD release of Sands of Iwo Jima/Flying Tigers….

Sands of Iwo Jima shows the Duke in one of his best wartime performance and actually has the best looking print of the reissues but that has to do with it being restored for it’s original release.  The Flying Tigers is a pretty good war picture and benefits from the likeable performance of John Carroll. Not only did Sands of Iwo Jima get the Duke his first Oscar nomination but also saved the U.S. Marine Corps.

The WMB review of SoIJ can be found here, if you’re interested.

  1. Wow, this movie SOIJ was again one of my favourites when I first saw it in cinema, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia at 5 years old in 69.

Throughout the next few years , reruns were still shown on cinemas & local TV. It disappeared from my radar until the recent years when I passionately started my collections of black & white war movies from the 1930s to 60s.

SOIJ, the marching song , the flag raising at the mount & of course when Striker gets the bullet….are the most enduring and scenes are remembered from the movie.

Today, my favourites on the Iwo Jima war includes, Eastwood’s versions.
