Spielberg’s “War Horse” Trailer

Well.  I guess its time to say something about “War Horse.”  I’ve been avoiding it, because, well, its a “horse movie” and I’m really not sure how this is going to play out.

But, judging from the trailer there will be lots of WWI scenery and CGI eye-candy to take in, so…

From the Official Site (http://WarHorseMovie.com/)

From director Steven Spielberg comes “War Horse,” an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets-British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter-before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse-an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war-a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

I’m still on the proverbial fence on this one.  A “theatrical hit”? Heaven help us.

I also am torn on this one. As much as I treasure each of the few war movies we get, I am leery about Spielberg. For example, he had a hand in “Super 8″ and I’m sure his influence was responsible for every kiddie aspect of that film. I find it hard to believe he is going to allow a realistic depiction of the horrors of WWI. The info you provided makes it sound like “the epic adventures of a cute horsey on the Western Front”. Original title – “My Friend Flicka Goes to War”. I hope I am surprised. The horse may die at the end, but so did Old Yeller and that was not an adult movie.

  2. One of the biggest crimes humans have committed apart from starting wars is to drag innocent creatures along with them. If this movie helps to raise awareness… Why not. It will have to be cheesy because showing what it really was like for he horses would make a few people in the audience gag. And we can’t have gagging people in the audience now, can we.

Saw the film on November 1st. Spielberg is back in excellent form. Excellent story, direction and beautiful photography. A true visual epic with a great John Williams soundtrack.

Yeah… it’s a horse movie, but it humanizes the horse. It tells the story of a horse as a soldier. It is not “Black Beauty”. The combat scenes are spot on and the sappyness is a 6 on a scale of 10. A must see for WW1 buffs. On DVD or in the theatre.
