Dale Dye on Platoon, Blu Ray Drops Today 5/24
On the day that Platoon appears on shelves in a much-awaited Blu Ray format, MovieWeb has an interview with war movie consultant (and soon director) Dale Dye about both movies....
Oliver had been trying to do Platoon, or a version of Platoon for about 10 years, and couldn't get anybody to back him. The time wasn't right, sociologically, in the United States. Oliver never compromised, going through that long process of getting somebody to back him to make this film. He knew the reality of combat in Vietnam, so he was unwilling to compromise on anything. He absolutely wanted it to be the closest, emotional look at what men went through in Vietnam, in infantry companies, that he could possibly do. He never compromised that.

The Blu Ray edition of Platoon is in my queue, so expect a review soon! I dunno if I'll wind up buying this one, if it's a good enough improvement I just might.

Winner* of 4 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, and based on the first-hand experience of Oscar®-winning director Oliver Stone, Platoon is powerful, intense and starkly brutal. "Harrowingly realistic and completely convincing" (Leonard Maltin), it is "a dark, unforgettable memorial" (The Washington Post) to every soldier whose innocence was lost in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam...

Besides Apocalypse Now I cannot watch other VN era movies. There are no bad scenes or actors whose roles aren't fittingly defined and then portrayed. The Cherry, The Lifers. the LT caught between a rock and a hard place, The shorttimer, who is only getting shorter. The Kiss Ass getting his just desserts and the unspoken heroism of the everyday joe pulling or not pulling his weight. It's movie IMO that any veteran can immediately warm too. Who can forget the first day out of boot, getting immediately deployed. The sense of purpose and willingness. All rent asunder. A great movie. Anyone that's been forward deployed will immediately warm to this. Those that never served will get a taste from the portrayed experiences. As good as it gets.

This is a classic movie. Watching it for the first time in about ten years it did seem a little more primitive than what I remembered, but if you think about when this came out, it should put things into context in terms of what it achieved.
Excellent movie, but worst blu ray disc packaging I've ever seen,
This review is from: Platoon Blu-ray (Blu-ray)
Five stars for the movie itself, no flaws noted in the blu ray transfer. -1 star for the flimsiest blu ray packaging I've seen to date: paper-thin plastic, cracked in multiple places during packaging or shipment (the other blu ray disc shipped along with it was undamaged, so perhaps the Platoon case was damaged before the shipment was assembled), no rigidity at all in the walls of the case itself. I didn't return it since the disc itself was undamaged and played fine, and ordered some better quality empty blu ray cases to replace damaged ones, and exchanging this item due to damaged poor quality case would likely just result in the replacement having the same case issues.
