Tobruk (1967)

I just have to start off with this:  While watching "Tobruk" I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen this picture before.  I did a little remembering and it came to me.  I haven't seen this movie before, but rather the later film which visits a lot of the same events, Raid on Rommel.  And to be honest I don't know which is better.

To recap the story, well, at least told in this version, a group of British commandos led by Col. Harker (Nigel Green) stages a sneak attack into the heart of Rommel's Afrika Corps stationed at Tobruk.  Disguised as German POWs, they take with them a group of German Jews now fighting on the British side, led by Capt. Bergman (George Peppard).  Oh, and they borrow this idea from an American who the SIG guys have to rescue, one Major Craig (Rock Hudson.)

Really this film isn't anything to write home about.  Although the way the events transpire here make them somewhat more believable than in Raid on Rommel.  You'll bear witness to the same events as well, and it looks like they may have re-used the same sets (the real guns maybe?) for parts of Raid on Rommel, which was ultimately distracting, inparticular the shore guns.  There's the fuel depot which goes up in a fiery blast caused by a stolen German tank, the foreign element, this time played as a father-daughter pair of British Nazi sympathizers from Egypt.  Eh, its all rather mechanical, as is most of this movie.

Oh, and then there is the nearly-necessary "traitor in our midst" of the German Jew soldiers, which we can pretty much figure out, but isn't really revealed until the end.

Bah, really I can't find much else to say about it.  It's your average '60s war movie/action movie.  Lots of stock sound effects, formula gunfights and "star power" acting.  To be honest I wish I hadn't seen "Raid" first, as I might've liked Tobruk a lot more.  However it is definitely a good few marks above the latter movie.  Check it out on a boring Sunday afternoon if you dare.
