The Longest Day has been voted the best war film by British veterans. One of these days I'll try and watch The Longest Day (again, when I'm awake enough to make it through!) and get a review up.
The 1962 movie charts the D-Day invasion on Normandy in 1944 and stars Richard Burton, John Wayne, Sean Connery and Richard Todd.
Saving Private Ryan came second in the nationwide survey by Sky Movies Classics and Forces Reunited.
The next three films were A Bridge Too Far, The Dam Busters and The Cruel Sea.
Todd served in the British 6th Airborne Division during the Second World War.
He was one of the first British soldiers to land in Normandy on D-Day and served under Major John Howard, the man he actually plays in the film.
Todd said: "What sets the Longest Day apart from so many popular and successful war films is that it is grounded on fact. It has the honesty and attention to detail that is often missing from the extravagant, special effects ridden war films of today."
The survey marks War Stories, a season of more than 40 of the best war films ever made.
