Not to poo-poo yet another remake, let alone a remake of a film that really doesn’t need to be remade, the 1930 classic All Quiet on the Western Front will get the treatment.  And the lead role?  Expect to see Harry Potter Daniel Radcliffe take the lead spot as the young German infantryman cast into the trenches of WWI.

Producing duo Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson wrote the script and will produce through their Sliding Down Rainbows Entertainment production shingle.

Says Stokell, “Daniel brings a vulnerability and innocence to Paul. When we realized how much he loved the script we were really excited because we know he can tap into the delicate balance between intensity and believability that is critical for this demanding role.”

Based on the World War I novel by Erich Maria Remarque, “All Quiet on the Western Front” was first adapted for the bigscreen in 1930 by Lewis Mileston, whose film later took home the Oscar for Best Picture

I will remain skeptical to see if they can pull off what MilestonE (cough, Variety) managed to achieve in 1930, and what made it a pioneering and visionary film.  You can read my review of the original All Quiet on the Western Front here….  and be sure I will post more news on this as I find it.

  1. Please no!I just watched My Boy Jack, starring Radcliffe as Jack, Rudyard Kipling’s son who went missing in action during one of the first battles in WWI. If it hadn’t been for Radcliffe the movie would have been quite touching. After all it’s a tragic story. Unfortunately he was soo unconvincing. He really isn’t that good an actor.

  2. I am also skeptical, but I would counsel giving Radcliffe a chance. I know I will taking a beating for this, but I like the remake starring Richard Thomas. I think it holds up well compared to the original and Thomas does an admirable job. If John Boy can do it, why not Harry Potter? Unlikely, but possible.
